The first C G Kiran Memorial Lecture & Symposium on Odonata was held on January 18, 2020 at Academy of Climate Change Education and Research, Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur. The program was organized by Society for Odonate Studies in association with Academy of Climate Change Education and Research, KAU, Thrissur; Nature Trust, Trivandrum; and TIES, Kottayam.
Dr. K. A. Subramanian (Scientist, Zoological Survey of India & IUCN SSC Specialist Group (Odonata) Member) inaugurated the function. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of eminent personalities such as Dr. Nameer P. O. (Special Officer, ACCER, KAU), Mr. Samuel Vanlalngheta Pachuau IFS (Deputy Conservator of Forests & Wildlife Warden, Silent Valley National Park), Dr. Francy Kakkassery (HoD, Dept of Zoology, St Thomas College, Thrissur) and Dr. Abraham Samuel (Former HoD, Dept of Zoology, CMS College, Kottayam). A pictorial brochure titled “Common Odonates of Kerala” and a free downloadable E-book – “Introduction to Odonata” were released during the function. The report of Kole Odonata Survey 2019 was also released.
Dr. K. A. Subramanian delivered the first CG Kiran Memorial lecture on the topic “Dragonflies for Monitoring Landscape Health.” Afterwards, Mr. David Raju recounted his memories with CG Kiran and the Evolution of their book “Keralathile Thumbikal”. Mr. Sujith V Gopalan presented the report on Odonata survey conducted at Periyar Tiger Reserve. Mr. Renjith R. V. and Mr. Vivek Chandran presented the Survey report of Silent Valley National Park and Survey report of Kole Wetlands respectively. Mr. Muhamed Sherif did a presentation on the “Impact of flood in the diversity & abundance of Odonata in an Agroecosystem”. The program was attended by participants from different parts of Kerala including Research Scholars, Odonata Enthusiasts and Students.
